Mr Bagel is Back

Yes its true, despite a spectacular absence of blogging for over two months, Mr Bagel has returned.
Mr Bagel has been 'moving' from a remote country location to a more civilised part of Australia.

Moving has required Mr Bagel to do five seperate trips of over 2,000kms each, despite selling what we thought was almost all of our worldly possesions, we still had to do five trips to move our 'personal belongings'. Which raises one very valid point, how personal can 5 trailers worth of belongings be? Do you think Mr Bagel might just be a horder? mmm?

Anyway after selling all our furniture we have been rushing around buying beds and fridges and lounges and just about everything else required to life a civilised life. Now that Mr Bagel has moved to civilisation he has decided to stop talking to the soccer ball with a wig. (Tom Hanks.)

We've only been in town a week but, living where there are shops, and services is such a refreshing break from living hours away from the most basic shopping. Its taking some adjustment, I generally spoke to about 3 peaople a month where I lived, now I see hundreds a day.

Welcome to the 16th Edition of JPix, -The Jewish Photo Carnival.

Ok, Mr Bagel has been a naughty boy. I've been meaning to put JPix up for a while and each time, time has got the better of me. With Rosh Hashanah,Yom Kippur and Sukkot following each other and also having work which meant less time for blogging its been a battle.

Through The Stormy Clouds

A Guest Post By Mrs Bagel

As I mentioned in my last post, I have been really busy working over the last couple of weeks. Part of my work included driving 2 hours on Sunday to deliver a package. Considering once I would get there it would take 10 minutes to drop off the package, I deciding to take the whole family - we don't go on day trips very often.

It ended up being a really nice trip, the girls were so well behaved in the back seat for 2 hours and I dropped off the package with no problems at all - I didn't even get lost! Earlier on Sunday we had visitors and we didn't get to leave for our trip until 2pm, so we arrived to drop off the package at about 4 pm. At 4pm on a Sunday afternoon there are no shops open or anything like that, so we decided to take the girls down to the forshore to have a look at the boats.

The sun was setting and looked so pretty shimmering on the water, the breeze was getting colder and stronger by the minute, but I did manage to get out of the warm car and take some photos which I have posted some of today and will post a few more over the next couple of days. Enjoy!

The 14th edition of JPix!

Rafi G from Life in Israel has been gracious enough to do this Fortnights JPix.

JPix is looking for people willing to host the upcoming editions. It runs every fortnight and usually is posted on a Wednesday/Thursday, but due to Rafi being away it was agreed to extend this edition to Friday.

Don't foget your best chance of getting into JPix is submit your posts, it's simply too time consuming to expect every hoster to search hundreds of blogs to find photos, so if you missed out recently, get upset with.. yourself.

Now that people know they have to submit to have a good chance to be in JPix the work load is a lot easier.

For those that are willing to give hosting JPix a go, (thanks Rafi G for your offer to host JPix 14 this time) I would still encourage you to go scouting for 'new talent' but in essence, the regulars have been whipped into shape and most of the work is basically already done.

Now knowing this, who is going to host next fortnights JPix15? If you miss out, JPix 16 and Jpix 17 are still available as well. Leave a comment or email Mr Bagel to let me know.

Yes its that time of the fortnight again.

I really can't believe how quickly the time has gone, it seems theres not enough hours in the day. Despite the demands placed on our time, JBloggers are a funny bunch, it seems some of us consider our blogs to be such an essential part of us that if we go on holidays we suffer blog withdrawal.

The good thing about being a JPixer is you can go on that holiday guilt free, knowing you'll be able to bring back lots of photos for JPix! (and possibly yourself??)

Hosting a JPix is always rewarding, theres that sense of oh no theres only 2 days to go and I haven't even started it, but in the end we all manage to get it done some how. By the way regulars might notice this JPix is a day late, well tar and feather Mr Bagel!

Baleboosteh has been gracious enough to do this Fortnights JPix. It is a day late, seems with my birthday yesterday the onset of senility is faster than I could have imagined. JPix completely skipped my thoughts, which isn't usually the case.

The thing is JPix is now basically running like a well oiled machine, there were a few grumblings last fortnight, when one or two regulars were dropped due to not submitting, but now that people know they have to submit to have a chance to be in JPix the work load is a lot easier.

For those that are willing to give hosting JPix a go, (thanks Rafi G for your offer to host JPix 14 in 4 weeks time) I would still encourage you to go scouting for 'new talent' but in essence, the regulars have been whipped into shape and most of the work is basically already done.

This particular edition of JPix Photo carnival is reflective of just how much growth JPhotographers are achieving, there really are some beautiful shots. Beautiful content isn't always the essence of what makes up a superb photo, some of the very best photos are of the mundane.

Speaking of Beauty, Baleboosteh has done a marvelous job of JPix 12, and thrown down the challenge, remember there are no hard and fast rules in presenting JPix, its like any creative process, it works best with a sense of freedom and la joie de vivre.

What is JPix
JPix is a carnival for Jews and their pictures, it doesn't necessarily have to be that 'joyous expression of art' which photography can capture, it doesn't have to be just about photos of Eretz Israel, though they are most welcome, its not even about communicating some deep spiritual meaning in a long photo essay, although that's alright too, its about two things.

You're Jewish and you have photos you want to share, whether they be family, historical, artful, funny, quirky its about sharing, so get your submissions in for the next JPix.

It has been some time since Mr Bagel has had the pleasure of hosting a JPix Photo carnival.

In that time I've seen over the last 5 months the carnival grow from strength to strength. I must admit I never thought it would consistly get the quality of attention that it has received from the varying hosts. Every blogger has a different style, and that's something most of us have come to accept. A few bloggers excel in graphics, others in writing prose, some just for raw analytical skill others, otherswell they're just plain readable.

Hosting a JPix certainly challenges the graphic skills somewhat of some hosters, but it has also helps bring forward skills some bloggers haven't previously displayed. Any way getting to the short of it, JPix hosters so far have been a varied bunch in almost every way, there has been quite a deal in variation of displaying Photo's in the JPix carnival.

Yet there has been one quality that has remained constant every hoster has done an exceptional job at hosting JPix the Jewish Photo carnival.
If you'd like to have a go at hosting JPix then don't be shy.

A Jerusalem Moment:Mincha Time
A long summer day is coming to a close. The sun is approaching the western horizon. It doesn't matter if you are at the home or at the office. It's "mincha time". You stop whatever you are doing and you head off to the synagogue. Here is what "mincha time" looks like at in the Sha'arei Chesed neighborhood: Cosmic X shows us A Jerusalem Moment: Mincha Time .
As sunset comes to Jerusalem Cosmic X also shows us Jerusalem Of Gold one of the 'Wolfson Towers' close to sunset.
Cosmic X stumps us with Another Mystery Tree In Jerusalem the answer is worthy of praise, his journeys also take us to The Other Side Of The Bridge .

Muse continued her adventures in Jerusaelm after being mistaken for a tourist by an enthusiastic guide, she exlaims I ended up at the Kotel, her day trip the other day provided a wealth of beautiful sights and scenes, and if you check out the next lot of photos the last one will make you end up exclaiming Ahhh, Jerusalem both posts are at me-ander.

ModraY takes us to Gan HaShlosha (Sakhne) posted at Israel In Photos he also takes us to Jaffa, Sabil Abu Nabut , and presents us with the visual feast Images of Israel 2007: Jaffa posted also at Israel In Photos. ModraY takes us to Peace Island on the Border of Israel and Jordan.[More about Peace Island] a place of both hope and despair. Theres some great views of everyday life in Haifa with Haifa, Hadar Hacarmel and Haifa, Wadi Nisnas.

It is with some irony I view the summer scenes shot by ModraY of 'Jerusalem Beach' in Tel Aviv whilst typing with frost bitten fingers on the other side of the world. Aliyah really does look attractive.
Little FrumHouse on the Prairie is visiting Israel and gives us Another Israel Update I hope baby and Dad are feeling better.

I must say I'm impressed with just how good a Job David has done.

Its a Huge edition make sure you check it out. JPix 7

What pleases me is that the JBlogosphere has actually really stepped up and offered to host carnivals.
Its tough being the organiser of this JPix Carnival.

After hosting JPix 5, Baleboosteh enjoyed it so much she put her hand up to host JPix 6 too!
I must say I'm so happy people have responded well to this carnival, It was always going to be a carnival for 'everyone'

What pleases me is that the JBlogosphere has actually really stepped up and offered to host carnivals.
Its tough being the organiser of this JPix Carnival.
With , Me-ander hosting JPix 3: Pt 1 & Pt 2, Chaim hosting Jpix 4 and Baleboosteh doing, JPix6 (after doing JPix 5) David from Termunot putting up his hand to do next fortnights JPix7 [Submit] and Rafi doing Jpix 8, Mottel has just declared his interest, so he most likely will do JPix9, I feel exhausted. (Chuckle)

That's why this carnival is so good, every one participates, we often unfortunately focus on the negative sides of things in life, but with JPix, its been both fun and entertaining!

Chaim from Life of Rubin has done a stupendous job of JPix4.

I'm really starting to enjoy this photocarnival.

JPix3 The Purim Edition - Part 2

Once again the incredible Batya from Me-ander has come up with an outstanding carnival.
This JPix 3 [Purim Edition] Was so big that it necessitated Batya doing to 2 seperate 'Carnivals', I'm amazed she is still talking to me!

Me ander has done a wonderful job with Part 1 of JPix 3, the Jewish Photo Carnival and now she has completed Part 2 of JPix 3, of the Purim Edition

Welcome to the JPix No 2,
The 2nd Jewish Photo Carnival

In beginning JPix carnival no 2, I have to say I'm quite over whelmed how many submissions this carnival has received to date. Its fairly obvious that there is a demand and need to have a Jewish Photo carnival.

Mixing it up!

This particular JPIx carnival, JPIX 2 , I'm going to try a slightly different format. Heck the Carnivals only 2 editions old, and I'd be surprised if you didn't see a lot more variations in the presentation of Photos and content.

Want to Host?

There's still a vacancy for the hosting of JPix 5,
Batya from Me-ander and Shiloh Musings is the Host for the next JPix 3,
Chaim from Life of Rubin is the host for JPix 4 .

If anyone has ever done a Haveil Havalim, Kosher Cooking Carnival, or other type of carnival then you'll be the first to agree hosting a carnival is quite a bit of work.

Yet in hosting a carnival you gain many things which aren't immediately obvious.

These include a huge increase in traffic, blog links to your blog, getting known by the Community and certainly not the least getting to know other fellow Jews and their blogs.

This isn't a definitive list of the benefits of hosting a carnival, but whilst JPix Carnival is a community carnival, those that host it aren't totally un rewarded.

Finally, I must say and state the obvious a carnival is only as good as the people and submissions they send; and the future for JPIx is looking fantastic, without any more speeches lets get right into it.

First of I'd like to draw attention to Joshua who has the Blog Josh's Photos, Josh submitted a stunning photo last month called leaping upon the mountains but the very day I posted the first JPix carnival his blog had a problem and he missed out on the link, his photos are stunning and that's why I've featured Ramon Crater as the featured image for JPix 2.

Batya's been busy snapping photos, [although she is still being all thumbs on the new camera phone] she sent in this photo essay of a wintery day's walk, Not quite what I had planned...

Seems she's been me-andering around the neighborhood and through rain, hail, thunder and lightening. Batya seems to have gone Snappy mad, taking so many pictures from the International Book Fair, one could think she forgot what book fairs are for, with all the Photos she took.

Yisrael provided me with another picture Vale of Shiloh which was a large expansive picture of the Shiloh Valley, unfortunately I couldn't find it on My Right Word so I have uploaded it to photo hosting, and by clicking on the small picture you can see it.

Most of you will be aware of the importance of Shiloh in Judaism, but some may not be aware of the amazing mosaics which have been recently found in areas surrounding Shiloh. These archaeological treasures may 'never' have existed if Israelis hadn't become aware of them. Anyway I'll let someone far more qualified take you on this journey of Mosaic treasures.

Sights, Out and About

What else would you do when near Zion Square than go eating out Kosher, it seems Batya has had the busiest fortnight I've ever seen. There certainly wasn't a lack of colorful characters from her vantage point whilst eating her meal, the sunset on the way home looks breathtaking.

Her thumbs are back as she discovers her new mobile phone doesn't do some things her old phone did. Barely sleeping due to the worry of knowing if her new phone alarm would go off automatically like her old one. A restless sleep, hours fly by, and the new day dawns .

Mottels photo of Venezia and World Peace is very evocative of the past gone by, it seems to capture the essence of time passing, as though it is paradoxically a time lapse camera .

Mottel from Letters of Thought submitted the photo under Travel, but personally its such an exceptional photo, I have placed it in the Art category.

There's something about the genre of black & white photography, I'm sure its more than the sense of age it conveys, its the tonal depth, contrast and its ability to pick up and accentuate images that in color would be rather more bland and less enlightening.

In black aand white nuances are seen, a perfect example is A Simple Jews Black and White picture of the Week, Within a Puddle, a beautiful photo, and an evocative title.

Snoopy the Goon from SImply Jews shows us his not the only one feeling cold with Winter misery, wet nuts. Make sure you click on the smaller blogger picture to see the larger more detailed image.

The irrepressible Yid with Lid approached Bagelblogger asking if 'manipulated photos' could have a place on JPix, being a fan of Photographic satire myself, I could see no reason why not.

So it is with amusement that we view Yid with Lid's submission Mr President, Stop Buying Abbas' Snake Oil

I must admit Bagelblogger enjoys manipulating photos, and one I only did today is a deliberately obscure Miss Piggy.

Not every one has a blog, and due to this some readers generaly miss out when it comes to participating in Carnivals. I had an enquiry related to this and, so in the interest of providing access to other Jews who aren't so computer savy or just plain well don't have blogs, I've established a Photo hosting account , JPixcarnival photo hosting where seperate files of photos can be submitted and displayed on JPix.

Now its quite some work, so if you do have a blog use your blog to display your photos, but if you know some one who would like to share there photos with the greater Jewish community then there is that opition now available.

JPix No 1 :The inaugural Jewish Photo Carnival

The Carnival begins..

Photographs

If a picture tells a thousands words, what does a photograph capture?

Is it a fleeting moment of time? An impression, emotion, memory, sensibility?

Is it a 'piece' of ourselves? Our time, space, consciousness? Or is it all of these and more?

Photography has a relatively short but intensive history, no doubt one of the turning points was the issue of the Kodak of 1888, it was sold on the premise any one could use it and came loaded with an impressive 100 shots ready to shoot. Since the time that photography became more and more accessable to the common person, innovation after innovation has kept our interests in photography.

I'm old enough to remember the amazement I felt when I saw my first instamatic Polaroid land camera, it developed pictures, right there in front of you.

I have been told by a reliable source that Jack from Jacks Shack was actually alive when they were using the very basic and inexpensive Student Camera, which doesn't suprise me, Jack's quite an antique...

Speaking of Students and Cameras, in my student days, the price of photography meant there was little room for experimentation, you shot each shot hoping not to waste your money, now days with advancements in digital photography, you can afford to be adventurous, any poor shot is easily editable on your camera, you simply collect the good ones and dump the bad ones with the enormous increase in size of memory modules, it seems the sky is almost the limit to the number of pictures you can take with a digital camera.

There is a long history between Photography and Jews, including one of my favorite Photographers Alfred Stieglitz, but this is far beyond the scope of this humble 'Picture Carnival' , but importantly I'd like to mention what JPix is all about.

What is JPix
Simply put JPix is a carnival for Jews and their pictures, it doesn't necessarily have to be that 'joyous expression of art' which photography can capture, it doesn't have to be just about photos of Eretz Israel, though they are most welcome, its not even about communicating some deep spiritual meaning in a long photo essay, although that's alright too, its about two things.

You're Jewish and you have photos you want to share, wether they be family, historical, artful, funny, quirky its about sharing, so with out further ado, we now begin to look at what is in essence a virtual 'part of us'.

Eretz Israel

I love viewing photos of Israel, and some one I've followed before they even made aliyah was Evan from Planet Israel, Evan's tours of Israel just exude the genuine excitement he has for Israel, he has a personal approach and well its the next best thing to being there. In his photo essay The Road To Beit El we are shown first hand parts of Israel, those of us in the Diaspora never get to see. His visit to Beit El is a indepth series of essays both beautiful and informative, check them out.1. The Road To Beit El 2. The Orange Revolution 3. The Beit El Animal Corner 4. Building in Beit El 5. Back to Beit El for the Aliyah Shabbaton 6. Beit El in History: The Patriarchs and 7. Beit El in History: The Tanachic Period , quite a collection, I know but as always with Evan worth the viewing/reading.

Cosmic X in Jerusalem takes a photo of the mundane that expresses just a little more than first glance S ST STU STUP STUPI STUPID , on a different note he shows the slowly developing change in the western entrance to Jerusalem with Building Bridges In Jerusalem, not quite what you expect from the title, or well its just another day. You've all heard of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, well Cosmic X thinks he might have found Israel's answer in Scraping It in Tel Aviv.

Jameel from The Muqata has also noted the prevalence of street Graffati and like Cosmic X he ponders its source, his Photo essay is a must see, in this latest bout of Graffitit appearing all over Israel. Check it out Who are the Mysterious Graffiti Wizards of OZ? some how I think Jameel's suspicions on its source might be ri rig right.

Jameel takes us on blast from the past with this midnight adventure, this was a highlight for me and its good to see it get some light again.Amazing Midnight Visit to Kever Yehoshua bin Nun.

For another blast thats very Fresh from The Muqata, Jameel shows us a series of Photos from up in the Golan and Tzefat, yes it's cold and there's Snow pix from Northern Israel today.

With the Western Negev in the News lately, its a good time to pop over to David's blog My LIfe under the Iron Rain and check out this beautiful Postcard from Meflsim. David featured a series of photos showing the expense and trouble locals have to go to to try to endure the raining of rockets. Its a must see, its was from earlier this year but check it out, Changes in the view,changes in the calendar. Even with never ending cahnce of rockets David has captured the beauty of a Winter Casuality.

Dave Bender from Israel at Level Ground goes all arty on us with his rendetion of Jerusalem of Gold and Blue, he gets his more serious self with Israel - Syria cut secret peace deal, I'm not sure of the veracity of the story but the photos of the Golan Heights are beautiful.

Muse from Me-ander has been slowly watching a neighbouring house getting built which is almost finishing the roof , things are getting cold and chilly but there's still beauty in the Winter Mornings. On the erev of Tu B'Shvat Muse takes some strange Erev Tu B'Shvat sights in. Make a note of the origin of the Beautiful Iris which appears in the comments.

As a final gesture of the Eretz Israel section I'd like to feature this Blog which I came across, simply named Photos of Israel the blog Israel4321 has some simply stunning photos, such as this series:

Sights, Out and About

It seems Treppenwitz was Trippin The Light Fantastic a while back with his journeys to the Edge. His sent us some Postcards from the Edge which truly have to be seen to be believed.

Mottel from Letters of Thought shows us a photo from last year of a well known landmark, 770 as he contemplates what it means to him to be close to his Rebbe for Yud Shvat. He has a wonderful photo essay titled A Story of Five Nights -a Yud Shvat Photo Essay which is definitely worth a look.

The Jetsetting Sara with No H celebrates the Sunshine a while back, from her new state of Residence, Cali as she likes to call it. Just before her departure from San Francisco after visiting a friend she shows us her Last San Francisco Pics, which are definitely showing some California creativity. Sara shares her new home with us, Back Home around the House luckily her house isnt the last house amongst the redwoods.

A Simple Jew posts an amazingly apt photo for a Serious discussion on feelings of being remote and removed from the everyday, titled Guest Posting From Chabakuk Elisha - Isolation, its not quite a photo essay but the photo conveys the essay's theme so well. [Photo taken in Uman Ukraine by a friend of Chabakuk Elisha]

Sarah from Sarah's View has been snapping away again, Sarah has caught the warm glow of a nice day basking a collection of Green Leaves, whilst out walking Down the Street she grabs a few images, some of the every day mundane others from a more abstract angle

Family and Friends

What has to be one of the high lights of family photos is this splendid example from Psychotoddler of why we don't time travel, Like Father like Son, A photo than Just makes you go awww from Dot Co Dot Il is Holding your Head High, just when you think the Photos can't get any cuter theres a Splish Splash.

PsychoToddler answers back with his rendering of things Beautiful in Shutterbug, which is nicely contrasted with a rather rough looking character in the last Photo. Sara with No H shows us the thousand emotions of being a teenager with The Face of a Teenager and then she takes a roll down to Vegas, Baby!.

In complete contrast Stacey from Stagey's Shmata shows us her girls playing in Dallas on a Snow Day

Life as Orieyenta conveys a beautiful story and picture of Her Daughter's Lo, wish for her Teddy to be Jewish, Winston's Conversion, and then just when you think things have settled down Here comes the Kosher Police.

Baleboosteh has a series of Photos of her Three mischief makers, Her daughter Jade celebrates her birthday, everyones ready for a piece of Jade's 7th Birthday cake, it seems the youngest Ruby was busy helping mum make Chocalate Cake by giving A Helping Hand and Amber who has recovered very well from Heart Surgery goes of to school for her first day.

Ok, if a dog is a man's best friend then I suppose its only fair Rahel from Elms in the Yard gets to show of a few of her friends, heres one On Duty and two rather formally dressed friends, Tuxedos, followed by a Downtown Tortie Friend, followed by some action Adventure in Jurassic park.

Occasions

A Simple Jew gets Ready for Shabbos Shira and Muse is Celebrating 29 years Back in Shiloh, she reminisces about the hardships and sacrifices women of Israel have made that helped make the modern settlement of Eretz Israel possible, this contrasts nicely with her photo of a rather sumptuous serving of fresh fruits.

Moving on Up... conveys what must be the most surprising Bank Transaction they've seen in a while, there's a ring on the door bell and .. Tu B'shevat Sameach!

Art fot Arts sake

One of My favorite bloggers A Simple Jew has been doing a series in Black and White, his last major series of Photos of his Shtetl were a must look each week, this week he has gone a step further, what intially looks like the Petals of a Flower which have become almost metalic in appearance,aren't quite what they seem. Check it out; Black & White Picture Of The Week - Week 3 , he follows this up with Picture of the Week - Week4.

While not quite falling under the category of photos, JPix will occassionally delve beyond the realm of the Photo, hence the term J Pix , some of the fractuals featured on the blog Not Quite Perfect are definitely out of this world.
Check out this rendition of Tu B'Shvat 5767 and if that doesn't grab your bizarre taste buds try this Window World if you like fractuals and computer rendered imagery then definitely check out Dzeni's exhaustive displays on his blog site,Not Quite Perfect .

The blog EinHodvisit seems to take the division between what is a Photo and an illustrationand totally strech the boundaries. There's some very wild computer manipulated imagery, a few of my favorites are Reflection of Knobs in Color posted by Reify and Using Batya's Wall Shot, the 'photo' Roofproof crosses that thin line between what is real and what is not real.

After speaking to Muse over at Me-ander and Shiloh Musings, the thought struck me just how many Jewish Bloggers are great Photographers. Now I'm a great fan of Haveil Havalim and this is not designed to distract from that great carnival, but the simple truth is there is no Pictorial themed carnival in the Jewish Blogging world.
